The FOCUS Summer Feeding Program at Holy Trinity Church

Through the provision of social and human development services, FOCUS North America helps the poor and needy in North America. We bring communities, parishes, and partners together in hands-on activities – uniting giver and the underserved — to help transform all of our lives and break the cycle of poverty that afflicts so many in our society..

FOCUS North America

About the FOCUS Summer Feeding Program

Over 15 million children in the United States—including over 45,000 in Allegheny County—struggle with hunger because they do not have regular access to nutritious and affordable food. Young people are particularly vulnerable to the consequences of food insecurity. Each month these families are faced with a difficult decision: pay the rent or buy groceries. And in this situation, paying the rent always wins — because it is easier to be hungry than homeless.  While the reach of federal nutrition programs is significant, thousands of food-insecure Pittsburgh children still go hungry, especially during the summer months when there are no free or reduced school lunch programs. There are long-term impacts of child hunger that extend beyond the discomfort of being hungry. Food-insecure children, according to Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, are more likely to suffer in areas of education and behavior. This summer, through its Summer Feeding Program, FOCUS will serve thousands of meals across the country inn seven cities, including Pittsburgh, which is being hosted at Holy Trinity Church in the North Hills.
